Montessori Teaching: Nurturing Autonomy & Confidence
Montessori education champions self-confidence, independence, and learning at one’s own pace—a method founded in 1907 by Maria Montessori, the first female physician in Italy. By providing children with thoughtfully designed materials within a nurturing environment and the freedom to choose their activities, each child learns through self-discipline, guided not by indoctrination, but by a mentor whose role is to foster the skill of knowing how to learn. Today, this approach thrives in more than 20,000 schools worldwide.
Montessori Kindergartens within the Victoria Programme
Since 1997, Partage Tanzanie has opened 13 Montessori kindergartens, welcoming 350 children annually (ages 3–6) across villages in the Victoria Programme. While these schools are open to all local children, orphaned children supported by Partage receive free education. Crafting Learning Tools Locally with Love Montessori teaching materials can be costly when imported. To remain sustainable and contextually grounded, Partage established a small workshop equipped with basic tools, where local educators and a meticulous carpenter collaboratively produce these essential materials. Upon completing their training, future Montessori teachers receive their own teaching kits created in this workshop—a testament to self-reliance and local empowerment.
The Region’s Only Montessori Teacher Training Center
To address a critical shortage of Montessori-trained educators, Partage Tanzanie launched the Montessori Training Center in Bukoba in 2007. It remains the only such center in the Kagera region, and so far has successfully trained 110 educators—making Partage Tanzanie a pioneering force in Montessori education across East Africa.
A Story of Impact — Renaida’s Journey from Student to Teacher
Renaida, now 32, was once a sponsored orphan supported by France Parrainages for 10 years. After exploring vocational training in sewing, her passion for working with children guided her toward the Montessori path. Thanks to her dedication, Partage enrolled her in the educator training at Bukoba. In 2013, she opened her own warm and welcoming Montessori kindergarten on the outskirts of Bukoba, serving 39 children from age 3. Her classroom is filled with homemade teaching tools crafted from wood, fabric, and upcycled local materials. Charging a modest tuition of €30 per month, she covers rent and pays a cook and an assistant—today, her school is full and Renaida thrives professionally and personally.
