School uniforms

much more than just clothing

In Tanzania, as in many African countries, school uniforms are an integral part of children’s daily lives. From their very first day at school, all students wear a prescribed outfit, often simple, yet highly symbolic.
A shirt, a skirt or shorts, sometimes a sweater, and the school’s logo: each school has its own identity and dress code.
Wearing a uniform is mandatory until the end of secondary school, and it is also adopted by most vocational schools, whether public or private.
Clear guidelines… with some variations
In public schools, uniforms are fairly standardized:
Primary school: white shirt, khaki shorts for boys, navy blue skirt for girls
Secondary school: white shirt with navy blue trousers or skirt
In private schools, however, colors and styles are chosen by the institution and may even change from one year to another.
A symbol of equality and belonging
First and foremost, uniforms help reduce visible differences between children, especially in contexts where economic disparities can be significant. Wearing the same outfit allows each child to feel more included.
Uniforms also create a strong sense of belonging. Children represent their school, take pride in it, and share a common identity.
A real cost for families
While uniforms promote equality, they also represent a significant expense for families.
For example:
Partage Tanzania nursery schools: around €17 in urban areas and €11 in villages
Primary schools: around €20
Secondary schools: around €30 for girls and €35 for boys
In addition, some schools now require a sports outfit or tracksuit, costing between €5 and €10.
These amounts, although modest by international standards, can be a heavy burden for many families.
A key to accessing education
In this context, the uniform becomes much more than clothing — it is often a requirement for attending school. Without it, some children may not be allowed into the classroom.
Thanks to your support, Partage Tanzania helps provide these uniforms, enabling many children to attend school with dignity and confidence.
Through this simple outfit, much more is given: a place at school, a sense of belonging, and a real opportunity to build a future.
