Letter from Mwanaisha

2 min read

The attached PDF brings together two handwritten letters in Swahili, dated 23 November 2018 and addressed to the Partage office in Bukoba, Tanzania, along with two photographs taken the same day.

The first letter is written by Mwanaisha, a young woman who was supported by the association from 2003 to 2012, through the end of her primary school years. She shares the story of the illness that prevented her from walking in 2009, the care and rehabilitation that helped her recover, and her life today: she is a seamstress, independent, supporting her mother, and about to get married.

The second letter is from her mother, Aida, who in turn thanks the team for everything they did for her daughter — and especially for the medical care she received.

The two photographs show Mwanaisha on her own, and then alongside her mother.

The PDF contains the original letters in Swahili.

Letter 1: Mwanaisha

Dear all,

I, the child named above, wish to send you my most sincere greetings and to congratulate you on the wonderful work you do. I was one of the children supported by the Partage association. I began receiving help at the Partage centre in 2003, and continued until 2012, when I finished primary school.

In 2009, I fell ill: I could no longer walk, and I had pain in my legs. Partage took care of me and brought me to Mugana Hospital for further treatment, but my condition did not improve. I was hospitalised for two weeks, then brought back home. The VP 16 office continued to provide care: I was given exercises to help me stand and walk again, and a carer from Partage Bukoba-town came to help me with those exercises — until I got better and fully recovered.

I am deeply grateful to the staff of Partage VP 16, Omukilembo and the town office, for everything they did for me. I am proud of who I have become — and that is the fruit of their work.

I would like to let you know that I am now living in Kyaka. I am a seamstress, I am independent, and I earn enough to support myself and my mother. I also have wonderful news: I am engaged, and I will be getting married soon. You are warmly invited to join me on my wedding day.

Thank you for everything you have done for me. May Almighty God bless you.

Your child, who thinks of you,

Mwanaisha

Letter 2: Aida Yunusu, Mwanaisha's mother

Dear all,

I am the mother of Mwanaisha Kokumalamala, who was supported by the Partage association from 2003 to 2012. I wish to express my heartfelt thanks for the precious help my daughter received from Partage throughout those years, through the Omukilembo office.

Above all, I thank you for the medical care she received during the year she was ill.

My gratitude goes to all the Partage staff at Omukilembo and at the main office as a whole. May God bless you.

I wish you every success in carrying out your mission.

I am AIDA YUNUSU,

Mother of the child
